Accommodation For Ageing In Place

Work has commenced on the $4.2M housing project in Atherton to support older women to age in place, and Councillor Con Spanos is pleased to see the project taking shape.

‘We’re proud to have been able to donate the land at 47 Kelly Street to Tablelands Community Housing Association (TCHA) for their Curtain Fig Cottage Project.

‘This is a real game changer for services that support older members in our community to live at home.

‘The Kelly Street location is central to town amenities while still being part of a larger green space.

‘This is one of the many ways we are showing our ongoing commitment to older people on the Tablelands and supports our Local Housing Action Plan objectives, THCA’s Housing Strategy and Queensland Government’s Homes for Queenslanders Plan,’ Councillor Spanos said.

The project consists of five duplexes with 10 one-bedroom accessible units on a site that will provide for indoor and outdoor communal interactions.

‘This commitment by Tablelands Regional Council unlocks our ability to increase the supply of social and affordable housing on the Tablelands,’ said TCHA Chief Executive Officer Cate Teece.

‘The project will assist in supporting our senior citizens as well as contribute to the local economy and growth of our community,’ she said.

Minister for Housing and Public Works the Hon. Sam O’Connor congratulated TCHA and TRC for working together to deliver this much-needed social housing in Atherton.

‘As part of the Crisafulli Government’s housing pipeline these 10 new social homes will provide safe and secure accommodation for senior women and eligible seniors in the community.

‘This is another example of our commitment to deliver more houses so more people have a place to call home,’ Minister O’Connor said.
