Keep the Fire Burning
Celebrate NAIDOC Week on the Tablelands with activities across the region and a flag raising ceremony and morning tea at 10am Monday 8 July.
‘We are inviting everyone to our ceremony to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples,’ said Mayor Rod Marti.
‘NAIDOC Week (Sunday 7 – Sunday 14 July) is an opportunity to learn about First Nations cultures and histories, and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on Earth.
‘This year’s theme is Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud, which celebrates the unyielding spirit of communities, and invites all to stand in solidarity, amplifying the voices that have long been silenced.
‘The fire represents the enduring strength and vitality of Indigenous cultures and is a symbol of connection to the land, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
‘As we honour this flame, we kindle the sparks of pride and unity, igniting a renewed commitment to acknowledging, preserving, and sharing the cultural heritage that enriches our nation.
‘As a Council, we are committed to playing a critical role, in partnership with our community, in establishing a clear roadmap towards a reconciled, just and equitable region.
‘We’ll be raising the Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islands and Australian flags outside our office on Mabel Street in Atherton.
‘We fly the three symbols to honour every Australian and recognise the integral contribution First Nations Peoples have made to our region and our country.
‘Other groups and organisations are hosting celebrations and you can find details on our events calendar — be sure to add your event as well.
‘It’s fantastic to see our community embracing NAIDOC week and celebrating our community’s First Nations Peoples,’ said Mayor Marti.
